Molly has had 26 crushes but exactly zero kisses. Now her twin Cassie is swept up in her first romance, Molly has never felt more alone. Love confessions can only go one way for fat girls: utter humiliation - Right?

Synopsis

17-year-old Molly knows all about unrequited love - she's lived through it 26 times. She crushes hard and crushes often, but always in secret. Because no matter how many times her twin, Cassie, tells her to woman up, she’s sure love confessions can only go one way for fat girls: utter humiliation. But when inseparable Molly and Cassie make a new friend Mina, who just happens to be in a band with Molly's latest unattainable crush Will, they embark on a mission to make Molly's first kiss actually happen. When Cassie falls for Mina, the two get totally caught up in their first relationship. Meanwhile Molly finds herself hanging out more and more with her cute nerdy coworker Reid who Cassie disapproves of. Molly can’t help feeling she’s drifting apart from Cassie, while Will keeps her in Cassie's world, Reid seems to take her further from it.

The Upside of Unrequited is a feel-good summer romance set in 2015 DC/Maryland against the backdrop of the Supreme Court decision on gay marriage (Molly and Cassie’s two moms decide to get married). The story centres around a classic teen romance love triangle but at it’s heart, the film is about the changing relationship between sisters as they grow up while also addressing Molly’s body confidence and her belief that ‘love doesn’t happen for fat girls’.
